Other Characters: Formerly Libby/Boltie, currently none!

Character Name: Luna
Series: Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward
Age: Chronologically around 19, but mentally and physically in her mid-twenties.
From When?: Luna’s ending.

Inmate/Warden: Warden. Luna was quite literally made to take care of others. Sure, she was technically built to take care of a child, but children, criminals; close enough, really. Anyway, she’s dedicated to doing the right thing, even when it’s difficult, and would jump at the opportunity to make up for her own crimes. She’d see the entire journey of reforming an inmate to be a healing process for both herself and her inmate, probably trying to form a close - although still professional - bond. You could call her a little too soft - and she most likely is - but paired up with an inmate who needs the carrot instead of the stick and Luna could do a lot of good.

Besides, if the Admiral ever gets tired of how nice she is, he can always reprogram her.

Her warden pact is pretty simple; make certain that Phi and Sigma succeed in saving the world from Radical-6 as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Item: Her music box necklace. Now whenever she winds it up, instead of playing Blue Bird’s Lamention, it repeats information for her on a loop.

Abilities/Powers: • Mind Transfer: Ever heard of DropBox? Basically, Luna can DropBox her mind. By connecting herself to the mainframe of a network, if her body is damaged or she needs to make a dramatic escape, Luna can shut her body down and place her psyche in the system until a new body is provided. There are some limitations to her powers, though, the first being that she can’t transfer her mind without connecting beforehand. If she’s suddenly attacked and hasn’t had time to join up with the Barge network, then Luna’s mind will die (well, it’ll technically be deleted) with her body. Secondly, she can’t place her psyche into organic hosts, since her data is incompatible with living beings. Finally, anything Luna wants to DropBox herself into must be connected to a network, meaning microwaves, egg-timers and stoves are off-limits, but laptops, cellphones and iPods are all good to go. For the record, if she puts herself in a laptop, no, your laptop won’t start running around, it will, however, start displaying messages from Luna and Google searching funny cat pictures.

Hacking: Once she’s transferred her mind into a system, Luna can hack nearly any mainframe and manipulate the core. Her powers are limited, of course, so that her control can last for only a couple of hours at best and the strength of the security can severely limit how far in she can go before she’s ejected. Luna cannot cover her tracks or mask her presence in a system, making it very easy for someone to notice that she’s been running around and sneaking peaks at their files or reactivating herself without permission.

Medical Experience: Luna is a fully trained nurse and has quite a bit of experience in the field of both adult and child medical care. She’s more accustomed to the space technology of the future, so she’ll need a little while to adjust to these old fashioned tools.

Personality: For a robot, it’s incredible just how human Luna is. She’s easily one of the most empathetic characters in her canon - if not the most empathetic. She wears her heart on her sleeve, leaving herself open to be hurt and betrayed, which she is in several timelines, but somehow managed to convince herself to forgive and forget.

However, underneath all her cheer and goodwill, Luna’s riddled with guilt. Despite having already made her peace with Sigma, she still carries the baggage from leading numerous people to their deaths in many different timelines and suffers extremely low self-esteem because of it. As she’s slowly being deactivated in Sigma’s arms, she tells him that she deserves this punishment for harming humans and - in her words - being too much of a coward to go against orders and save Akane from Dio.

Luna is all about morality. She firmly believes that a person should always strive to do good, even if it comes back to bite them in the ass. In the example above where Luna mourns her inability to act on the possibility of being able to save Akane, it’s clear that while she’s terrified of being shutdown or disappointing her creators, she still considers it her duty to do the morally right thing and step in to save a life.

Her belief in the three laws of robotics is unshakable, simply because she feels it gives her a sense of humanity; a soul, if you prefer. Luna is constantly questioning whether she’s a bucket of bolts or has developed into something more and uses the three laws as a moral compass and guidebook, thinking that by following those rules, she’ll become more than a mindless machine. For the most part, her belief does give her a boost in self-esteem, and she’s clearly overjoyed whenever she can follow any of the rules, whether it be by obeying an order from a human or refusing to harm one. However, it’s also a double-edged sword; because of her original orders from Akane and Klim, Luna was forced to inadvertently lead numerous people to their deaths in many alternate universes, therefor breaking the first law of robotics; and the first law of her personal moral code. Any time she breaks her rules, her self-esteem plummets, as shown in her ending when she refers to herself as a bunch of metal and plastic, openly wondering why anyone would trust a machine.

Luna has a hard time holding grudges because of her soft heart and trusting nature. In her ending, she actually sympathizes with Zero III, despite him trying to deactivate her system, mentioning that he was most likely also afraid of failing Akane and Klim. Clover, too, who accidentally ‘kills’ Luna, is immediately forgiven, her actions being played down by Luna claiming that Clover probably didn’t intend to hurt her; only scare her a bit. Even with Dio, who frequently attempts to - and usually succeeds in the - murder the other participants of the Nonary Game, Luna brings herself not to harm him any more than she must in order to subdue him in Phi’s ending. She’s often screwed over by others in her canon, regardless of how much she trusts or even idolizes them, but seems unable to ever really hate someone. The only time Luna comes close to holding a grudge is in her bad ending, where she takes Quark and leaves Sigma and Phi behind in Rhizome-9; while it appears that she’s furious at being betrayed by the person she loves most, she was actually acting to preserve the project, keeping in line with her duty to keep Sigma and Phi from leaving before they regained all their memories.

While she may have lied her way through the Nonary Game, Luna is actually an incredibly honest person, or at least wants to be. Due to her orders to keep quiet about her true robotic nature and tell nobody about the AB Project, she was forced to lie in order to continue the game, although she mentions numerous times that she wanted to tell her fellow players the true nature of Zero Sr. For example, when Clover believes Luna murdered Alice and threatens her for answers, Luna tells Sigma that she honestly wanted to explain what really happened, but was unable to. A more obvious show of her honesty is that way that she never chooses to betray her opponents and, in many cases, actually informs them of her decision to select the ally option, surprisingly keeping her promise, even when other plays begun lying to each other for more points.

Just because Luna is a pacifist, doesn’t mean she’s a doormat. Despite her strong resolve to always arrive at the most peaceful and mutually beneficial path, Luna does have her limits to how far she’s willing to be pushed; in easy mode, if the player dicks around with the puzzles, frequently clicking in and out of them, Luna becomes gradually more and more annoyed, telling Sigma to stop playing around and concentrate, eventually giving hints, then the answer - and if you player still refuses to finish - she’ll actually push Sigma aside and physically complete the puzzle by herself.

Because she’s spent her life with only the company of two reclusive scientists and a child that hated her, Luna isn’t very well versed in modern human interaction. She’s been programmed with the basics; be polite, don’t point out an ugly pair of shoes, etc. but she has no experience with slang or double entendres. When Sigma makes a joke that she should rub a nearby leaver up and down a few times (implying she should give it a handjob), Luna is left utterly confused, whereas other women in her canon easily understand Sigma’s perverted double meanings. Another point where her ignorance to modern culture is when Sigma asks if she’s single after she mentions that she would like to get married one day, to which Luna can only reply by saying that Sigma’s expression is frightening her. In the same scene, when mentioning what a passionate shade of red a bottle of wine is, she tries to hide her face as she claims it would be good for ‘wooing’ a girl. Yes. Wooing. Luna never uses slang or really any kind of informal language through-out the game, always sounding like a polite - albeit extremely sheltered - young lady.

Luna also has a natural instinct to trust everyone around her until she’s given a reason not to. Even when placed in a life-or-death situation, where people are encouraged to betray one another in order to escape, Luna opts to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Probably stemming from her lack of outside contact and therefor little experience of betrayal, Luna is always shocked whenever someone holds their personal success over the welfare of the group, but never really holds it against them, even though she doesn’t approve in the slightest. As mentioned above, when Luna is stabbed in the back by a friend, her trust is impossible to reclaim; she’ll remain civil and polite, but don’t expect her to be anywhere near as warm or affectionate towards you as she once was. There is a way to betray Luna and still remain her friend, but it’s not exactly the morally correct thing to do. In one timeline, when Sigma opts to betray Luna, she tearfully begs him to give her an excuse as to why he did what he did. When he’s unable to tell her why he sacrificed their friendship for personal gain, Luna becomes even more desperate and pleads with him to lie to her, so she doesn’t have to face the reality that she can no longer trust him. Luna is willing to delude herself and would prefer to live in a self-constructed fantasy than have to acknowledge that someone she loves doesn’t care for her in the same way.

Although a younger Kyle shrugs off Luna’s emotions as clever programming, Luna is as genuine and passionate in all of her feelings as she can possibly be. As she was speaking with Sigma, she told him that when she was forced to watch Akane be murdered that she felt like whatever she had for a heart had snapped in two, going as far as to say that even some of her processors nearly shut down from the despair.

Luna is extremely subservient to human beings. Again tying in with her wish to stick to the three laws, she does her best to obey orders from organic lifeforms, even if said orders go against her personal opinions. She sits back and watches one of her creators be brutally murdered, despite the fact she could easily have stopped it, simply because she was ordered not to intervene under any circumstances.

As shown through her relationship with Kyle, Luna isn’t the type of person to let herself be pushed away. Yes, she’ll give a person their space and won’t approach them if commanded to, but Luna would never completely leave a person alone, no matter how cruel they are to her. As a child, Kyle rejected Luna as a person, going as far as to lock himself in his room and refuse to even acknowledge her when she begged him to come out. Despite having the child destroy her self-esteem and leave her in an existential crisis over what makes something human, Luna, most likely, continued to try and raise him during their time in Rhizome-9. In Phi’s ending, when Kyle wakes up in the hospital, he’s first thinks he’s completely alone, only to notice Luna has been waiting for him to open his eyes instead of doting over her beloved Doctor. Even though Kyle has never given Luna a kind word and has spent his life actively pushing her away, she still worries about him enough to sit by his bedside and take care of him for nearly five hours.

Barge Reactions: Initially, she’ll be quite surprised at how many human beings there are. In her world, over two thirds of the population has been killed off and the remaining organic beings are scattered across the moon, so seeing such a large concentration is pretty strange. Luna’s not the type to judge, so you can expect her to try and make friends with everyone - and I mean everyone. From the most murderous psychopath to the friendliest extrovert, Luna just wants everyone to get along and survive their journey.

Unlike others in her canon, Luna isn’t going to know anyone from modern pop culture (e.g. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc.) judging by how dedicated her creators are to saving the world and not having any fun, it’s quite unlikely Luna will recognize anyone from a comic book or film. When it comes to the floods and breaches, she’s a robot who was raised on the moon by two psychic scientists after the Earth was nearly destroyed, so that two other psychics could go back in time. Nothing bothers her anymore.

History: Here.

Sample Journal Entry: Oh, yes... Hello! Wait, is this on? Oh. Um. P-please wait a moment! Ah, there we go. Once again, hello, everybody - it’s nice to meet you all. I’m, well, not exactly sure what I’m here for - the Admiral seemed a little distracted when he interviewed me - but I’ll still try my best when I’m given a more official role. Hm? Oh, right - I’m a Warden! A-again, I still don’t really understand what that means. I’m also a fully trained nurse, so if you’re injured or sick or just want to talk to somebody, I’m qualified and always ready to lend a hand... And anything you tell me will of course be strictly confidential, so please don’t be nervous asking for help with more... difficult subjects.

Yes. Well. I should be going now. Thank-you very much for listening.

Sample RP: Dying hadn’t hurt. She didn’t have pain receptors, after all, which she supposed was for the best. Literally falling to pieces probably would have hurt quite a bit, Luna thought, probably not the nicest way to go. Regardless, it was nice that the Admiral had given her a few hours to patch herself back up; get her hair restyled and glued back on her head, shine up her iris’. Strictly all cosmetic adjustments, seeing as the Admiral had already put her back together, piece by piece, not leaving so much as a scar or stitch on her artificial skin. It was impressive to say the least, and Luna wasn’t the type who was easily impressed - not after everything she’d seen, after all.

She gave herself a faint smile in the mirror, wondering absently to herself whether or not she should give her mouth another coat of colour to keep herself from looking suspiciously pale. She came to the conclusion that, no, she was fine. Everything was fine. Nobody would be able to tell that she was little more than a bucket of bolts all dressed up in faux human skin. Needless to say, Luna was nervous for her first outing into a genuine society full of all kinds of people - humans - with different views, different ways of dealing with things they didn’t like. Back in Rhizome-9, things had been simple; Akane and Sigma always agreed and Luna just followed along, nodding and smiling like the good puppet she was.

But now, now she was expected to go an extra mile. Assimilating with a small group of humans wasn’t too much of a challenge, but an entire ship full of organic lifeforms was a completely different story. It was dangerous. It was different. It frightened her. Luna swallowed, slotting a strand of hair back into it’s bun, and turned towards her door, skinny knees damn near knocking as she approached the exit, mind running wild with images of all the terrible things that could happen just from her opening that door.

Biting down on her lower lip to the point a thick white paste leaked from a pinprick hole and into her mouth, Luna twisted the knob.

Special Notes: If the mods aren’t comfortable with having Luna backing herself up in the network, would it be alright if the Admiral had a copy of her brain on a hard-drive so she can be rebooted if she ends up getting killed?
